Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Jack Youngerman

Happy Birthday Jack Youngerman!! This American artist was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1926. He later moved with his family to Louisville, Kentucky. He attended University of Missouri and also went to school at the University of North Carolina under a wartime program with the US Navy. Youngerman moved to Paris for a time, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was a Minimalist artist, creating works based on repeating geometric forms in various contrasting colors. Some of his images have been recreated into large, flat plate sculptures.
