Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Juan Gris

Happy Birthday Juan Gris!! This artist was a Cubist painter, from Madrid, Spain, born today, in 1887. He started his career by studying mechanical drawing and submitting his work to various newspapers. In 1906, he moved to Paris, becoming friends with other artists such as Henri Matisse, George Braque, and Fernand Leger. His focus became synthetic Cubism, using bright colors rather than the monochromatic palette of traditional Cubism.
