Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Happy Birthday Ludwig Mies van der Rohe!! German architect from 1886, this artist came from a family of stone carvers (where he got his start in the artworld). He later became associated with Peter Behren's studio, a fellow designer and architect. Commonly known as Mies, he led the way for architects in the latter 1920's and 1930's. His structures were simple creations from metal and glass. His furniture design was spare “skin and bone”. The Barcelona Pavillion is included here.
