Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)

Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Milton Avery

Happy Birthday Milton Avery!! Born in 1893, American painter Milton Avery was the son of a tanner who worked at menial jobs before finally supporting himself with his art. His wife was an illustrator and her income helped allow Avery to pursue his interests. His work was often overlooked as being too abstract to be considered representational, but at the same time not abstract expressionistic since it was representational! Nevertheless, he did become a well known modern painter of colorful, novel abstract landscapes, often called the “American Matisse”. The painting I am including today is called Gaspe Landscape, painted in Neuberger, Maine, in 1943.
