Happy Birthday Rosso Fiorentino!! Italian born Mannerist painter from 1494, from Florence, Fiorentino used oil and fresco techniques. His name, Rosso Fiorentino means “Red Florentine” in reference to his red hair. A pupil of Andrea del Sarto, Fiorentino became a leading figure in Mannerist painting, which was an offshoot of High Renaissance depicting great emotion. The Deposition From the Cross is an altarpiece and generally considered his masterpiece. The emotion of the familiar theme is heightened by the frantic removal of Christ using 3 precarious ladders contrasted by the resigned grief on the faces of the onlookers. Following the sack of Rome, in 1527, he settled in France for the rest of his life .
