Happy Birthday Philippe de Champaigne!! Born in Brussels in 1602, Champaigne came from poor beginnings. He was a landscape painter and later became a court painter after marrying Nicholas Duchesne's (his teacher's) daughter. Along with Voulet, Champaigne is said to be the most important artist of the mid 17th century. He was one of the fourteen founders of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. Most of the work he left is religious. I am including his Annunciation (1645), today.
