Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Francesco Granacci
Happy Birthday Francesco Granacci!! Italian Renaissance painter born in 1477, Francesco Granacci was a contemporary of Renaissance artists Michelangelo, Bertoldo di Giovanni and Filippino Lippi, even working as an assistant to Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The influence of Michelangelo is apparent when studying the sculptural quality of his figures, seeming to stand alone in the composition Rest on the Flight into Egypt with the Infant St. John. Another work resides in the Ufizzi Gallery, in the Renaissance Room, (which I had the joy of visiting this past June) Joseph Presents His Brothers to Pharoah along with Michelangelo's tondo The Holy Family.
