Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Martin J. Heade

Happy Birthday Martin J Heade!! Also from Pennsylvania, born in 1819, Heade was a landscape painter concentrating mostly on scenes from New Jersey. His favored settings were early morning, evening or an impending storm. He was gifted at depicting the dusky, almost eery, light relevant to his scenes. Storm Approaching Narragansett Bay is a great example of his skill at creating the ominous feel of an oncoming storm.
