Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Ephraim Haines

Happy Birthday Ephraim Haines!! American cabinetmaker, born in 1775, was an apprentice to Daniel Trotter, a cabinetmaker from Philadelphia. Several years later, the two opened up a partnership in the furniture making business. Haines moved into the lumber trade after 1807. He was known for his intricate vine and leaf carvings, in addition to distinctive chair feet, displayed in the mahogany armchair pictured below.
