Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)

Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Frank Duveneck

Happy Birthday Frank Duveneck!! Born in 1848, this artist was an American portrait painter from Kentucky. His father (Bernard Decker), a German immigrant, died when he was a baby and his mother remarried Joseph Duveneck. Frank began his study of art at age 15 and eventually went to Germany, becoming known for the development of the "Munich Style", a dark painterly style of vigorous brush strokes pierced with bright colors and bits of light. He was an influence to many artists including those of the Ash Can School. The painting below, Whistling Boy, is an excellent example of his technique.
