Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

John Sartain

Happy Birthday John Sartain!! The English painter was born today, in 1808. He was also an engraver who trained in London, in the line style. He immigrated  to the US where he introduced the country to mezzotints, a form of engraving using a drypoint method to create tones with thousand of tiny dots carefully placed. In addition to painting portraits and miniatures on ivory, he also did illustrations for books and magazines and created plates for bank notes. He was a friend and colleague of Edgar Allen Poe.
