Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Emile Bayard

Happy Birthday Emile Bayard!! This French illustrator, born in 1837, was selling his illustrations to newspapers by age 15. He studied with French painter, Leon Cogniet, for several years. Throughout his career he drew for many magazines as well as books. He is considered one of the first to draw “Space Art” of a scientific nature, illustrating From the Earth to the Moon, by Jules Verne. I am including his rendition of the character Cosette, from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, which is perhaps his best known work.
